MORITA THERAPY – Purpose Inspired Living
“Happiness consists in activity. It is a running stream, not a stagnant pool.” – John Mason Good
Morita therapy places great importance on purposeful living. Knowing your purpose, both your larger life purpose and your smaller purpose which includes moment-to-moment living and what you need to attend to and accomplish in any given moment. This can include preparing a meal, walking the dog, sweeping the floor, exercising, driving the kids around, balancing the checkbooks, or giving a presentation. It is very important to develop the skills of learning to pay attention to how you choose to live your day. Be mindful of your purpose and the activities you engage in, and decide to take action that supports your purpose.
Morita therapy constantly teaches the importance of co-existing with unpleasant feelings while still taking the necessary action towards your purpose. Sometimes life asks you to do something uncomfortable in order to achieve a longer term goal. If you procrastinate too long or get stuck along the way in trying to feel good all the time, you will miss your chance to live fully and shine brightly.
Many people who come to me for Morita coaching want to discover their life purpose. A good place to start is to be aware of your skills, talents and interests. Notice what grabs your attention and stirs your soul. Don’t search for a label, such as a psychologist, a journalist, a dog-trainer or the like, but instead search for what really moves you at a deep level. It may be the qualities of kindness, compassion, courage, love, peace, wisdom, unity, gratitude, laughter, tenderness or abundance that stir you and inspire you to live with more meaning. My purpose as a Morita coach is to help you bring forth that which you long to share with the world. You are unique and blending your deepest desires with action will bring about your purpose. Learning to respond to what needs to be done or learning to respond to what life is asking of you, can lead you to a purpose-inspired and very meaningful life. Your moment-to-moment purpose will create a natural flow towards achieving your larger purpose.
Be mindful of what reality is presenting to you, as this is where the true gift of opportunity is found. Always remember that life is a matter of attention. Life will require that you take risks along the way and when your life is turned upside down and inside out, look for the new opportunities that abound. Take one step at a time and let your enthusiasm, attention, appreciation and purpose lead the way.
Essentially self-discipline is the ability to get yourself to take action regardless of your emotional state. Just think about how much you would be able to get done if you could put your intentions into action no matter what. Morita coaching can help you accept what needs to be done, and do it. Learn to complete a task and focus on doing one thing at a time. Morita teaches you to give up on the need to do things perfectly. New research shows that happiness can be found in the ways you behave, what you think, and what goals you set for yourself. There is no happiness without action.
Morita has the approach that feelings are uncontrollable, you may really want to feel differently about something, but the reality of life is you feel what you feel. Shoma Morita says, “Reality is truth.” Life unfolds in a natural way and learning to accept what you can influence, what you can control and what you can not control is imperative if you want to lead a happy life. The Morita lifepath can put you back in touch with reality. You can achieve a better outcome in life situations when you have more reality-based information, as Gandhi said “Truth and reality are one.”
Accepting reality is a fundamental part of the Morita lifepath. There is a Japanese word “Arugamama” and this translates to mean “accept things as they are.” Acceptance and action are connected. You may need to accept things are the way they are, let go, and then take action in the direction of your purpose. Always allow your purpose to pull you in the right direction. Be aware and pay attention to your purpose, moment-by-moment, day-by-day as these will lead you in the right direction. You may need to accept that the floor is dirty and then take action and sweep the floor, you may need to first accept that your debts are out of control and then take action and apply for an evening or weekend job to bring in extra money.
Acceptance is a wonderful teacher, if you let it be. Acceptance can teach you how to flow with life and how to find freedom in a world full of control, manipulation, stress and pain. Once you surrender and accept that things are just as they are, you can then focus on what you really want to do with your life and then do it.
Wouldn’t you rather be living your life to its fullest instead of staying stuck in the pit of procrastination?
